Job description

The Data Engineer II roles at Microsoft are integral to the Global Skilling team, focusing on building a unified and governed data platform. These positions contribute to various layers of the WISE data ecosystem, including foundational data pipelines, Data-as-a-Service products, and reporting and analytics experiences. The team is dedicated to ensuring that data is trusted, discoverable, and actionable for decision-making across Microsoft. Candidates will work in diverse focus areas, including data platform foundations, backend services, and reporting and analytics.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering.
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering.
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements may be required for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain production ETL pipelines ingesting data from various sources.
  • Design and implement data-sharing patterns and access controls across organizational boundaries.
  • Contribute to data mesh patterns, including data contracts and domain-owned datasets.
  • Develop and maintain data governance solutions, including lineage, cataloging, and data quality.
  • Design, build, and operate REST APIs and backend services that expose WISE datasets as data products.
  • Define and manage API contracts, including schema design and versioning.
  • Build serving layers supporting low-latency data access.
  • Design and deliver Power BI semantic models and reporting solutions.
  • Build and support self-serve analytics experiences.
  • Instrument pipelines and services through observability practices.
  • Partner with Privacy, Security, and platform teams to ensure data protection and compliance.
  • Contribute to AI-ready data patterns designed for agentic consumption.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and documentation.
