Job description

This position focuses on leading the development and enhancement of work processes and systems in thermal and fluid sciences, particularly in combustion and emissions science. The role involves collaborating with stakeholders to optimize designs and conducting feasibility studies. The engineer will apply principles of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics to improve engineering and power systems. Additionally, the position includes mentoring junior engineers and ensuring high-quality decision-making through established processes.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Systems Engineering, or related field and 3 years of experience as a Thermal and Fluid Science, Mechanical, Combustion or Performance Engineer, or related position.
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Systems Engineering, or related field and 6 years of experience in a relevant engineering position.
  • Experience with thermal and fluid sciences, Value Package Introduction (VPI), and Value Package Change (VPC).
  • Knowledge of Engineering Standard Work (ESW) and Principles of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer.
  • Familiarity with GT-Power, Electronic Control Module (ECM), and Emissions data systems.
  • Expertise in Combustion and Emissions Science and Principles of Thermodynamics and Energy Conversion Systems.
  • Proficiency in the 7-Step Product Problem Solving Process and Systems Requirements Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems across business units.
  • Negotiate with stakeholders to gather input for analysis and design optimization.
  • Create and manage processes such as Pre Program Planning and Value Package Introduction.
  • Calibrate and validate engine performance models and assess experimental data quality.
  • Provide leadership in problem resolution for complex systems.
  • Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements for design development.
  • Establish acceptance criteria for systems and track requirements throughout the lifecycle.
  • Participate in Systems Thinking to predict system behavior and implement modifications.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers.

Benefits

  • Employees at Cummins are often offered comprehensive benefits that support financial wellness (retirement savings/401(k) or pension options and profit-sharing), health and wellness (medical, dental, life insurance, FSAs), and professional growth through training and tuition reimbursement—sometimes including full education funding. Work-life perks commonly include paid vacation and holidays, parental leave and adoption assistance, flexible work arrangements, inclusion-focused programs, and paid volunteer time to give back to the community.
