Job description

The Staff Backend Engineer will serve as the technical leader for the Enterprise Identity Platform team, focusing on designing and scaling identity services that handle millions of requests. This role involves a blend of deep technical execution and high-level architectural strategy, influencing both the development process and the final product. The engineer will ensure that security, latency, and reliability are prioritized while mentoring other engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The position requires a strong background in identity protocols and distributed systems.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience, with at least 2+ years in a Staff or Lead capacity.
  • Deep understanding of identity protocols and standards.
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining high-availability distributed systems.
  • Expert-level command of backend languages such as Go.
  • Experience with distributed databases (SQL and NoSQL) and an understanding of the trade-offs between consistency, availability, and partition tolerance.
  • A 'security-first' approach to engineering, with experience defending against common identity-related attack vectors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and evolution of core identity services to support global scale and enterprise-grade multi-tenancy.
  • Define long-term technical roadmaps and proactively re-architect systems to address systemic bottlenecks.
  • Take end-to-end accountability for the health, performance, and security of high-throughput backend services.
  • Champion best practices in CI/CD, observability, and automated testing.
  • Mentor senior engineers and foster a culture of rigorous design reviews and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Work closely with Product, Security, and Infrastructure teams to align identity solutions with broader business objectives.

Benefits

  • Employees at Uber are often offered comprehensive health, life, disability, and mental wellness benefits, along with wellbeing stipends, travel medical coverage, and monthly Uber credits for Rides and Eats. Employees also get generous paid parental leave, flexible time off, and family-planning support so they can care for themselves and their families at every stage.
