Job description

The Software Engineer role at IBM focuses on JVM Platform Engineering, where you will leverage your deep Java expertise to enhance the watsonx.data platform. You will work in an Agile environment, collaborating with various teams to optimize JVM performance and ensure high-quality software delivery. This position emphasizes building high-performance Java components and tuning JVM health in production. You will also mentor team members on best practices and contribute to continuous integration and deployment efforts.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional Java engineering experience, including at least 2 years in performance-critical or concurrent Java in a production environment.
  • Mastery of modern Java (v17+) and a strong understanding of the memory model, generics, and concurrency primitives.
  • Hands-on experience with JVM garbage collection tuning and profiling tools.
  • Proficiency in concurrent programming, including knowledge of java.util.concurrent and lock-free algorithms.
  • Clear written communication skills and the ability to document technical decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, code, and unit test performance-critical components using modern Java.
  • Implement thread-safe, lock-free data structures and parallel pipelines to enhance concurrency.
  • Profile and tune garbage collection and JVM settings to minimize latency in production.
  • Contribute to the automated CI/CD pipeline and address customer-reported issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve JVM bottlenecks and conduct code reviews.
