Job description
The role is for a backend engineer at Netflix, focusing on building highly available and scalable backend services and APIs for the advertising team. The team is responsible for creating tools that enhance the advertising experience for both advertisers and users. This position involves working with cutting-edge technology, including Generative AI, to improve the creative process and ad performance. The engineer will also mentor other team members and help navigate complex technical challenges.
Requirements
- 9+ years of experience designing, building, and operating highly available, scalable, and performant backend services in production.
- Deep expertise in backend engineering, including microservices architecture, database and data modeling, and cloud infrastructure.
- A strong history of writing production-quality, well-tested, and maintainable code, including API design.
- Strong large-scale system design skills, with the ability to bridge business needs and technical implementation.
- Experience designing and implementing backend APIs, data pipelines, and services that integrate with complex systems.
- A track record of tackling complex, ambiguous technical problems and developing pragmatic, long-term solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly.
- A history of successfully driving alignment across cross-functional teams to deliver against ambiguous, dense roadmaps.
- Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while handling multiple priorities effectively.
Responsibilities
- Define and build highly available, scalable backend services and APIs.
- Set architectural direction across services and raise the technical bar in design and execution.
- Mentor engineers and help navigate highly ambiguous problems.
- Build data pipelines and service architecture that enable massive scale and speed.
- Drive significant improvements in the quality and speed of creative moving through the platform.
Benefits
- Employees at Netflix are often offered flexible, people-first benefits—unlimited time away, generous parental leave, global family-forming support, mental-health programs (mindfulness, free counseling/coaching), and health coverage tailored by country. Financially, Netflix pays at personal top-of-market and lets employees choose their mix of cash vs. fully-vested 10-year stock options, alongside donation and volunteer matching. Convenience perks can include trust-based travel/expense policies, relocation support, and “Work, Not Drive” rideshare flexibility.
