Job description

The role is for a senior engineer on the OpenSearch Control Plane team at Amazon, focusing on managing a large fleet of cloud-native OpenSearch clusters. The team is responsible for ensuring high availability and durability for mission-critical workloads while automating the lifecycle of OpenSearch clusters. Engineers will work with a variety of programming languages and contribute to both OpenSearch and Apache Lucene. The position emphasizes treating operations as core engineering and driving architectural decisions in a large-scale distributed system.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 5+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language
  • 5+ years of experience leading design or architecture of new and existing systems
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leading an engineering team
  • 5+ years of experience in the full software development life cycle, including coding standards and operations
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Drive architectural decisions in a large-scale distributed system
  • Simplify legacy designs while proposing new ones and eliminate accidental complexity
  • Own the systems built end-to-end and lead incident response with customer-first urgency
  • Lead design and development of complex services across various domains
  • Build and apply AI fluency across the software development lifecycle
  • Mentor and grow engineers across the team to raise the bar for software development
  • Set technical direction and align solutions with customer needs and market opportunities
  • Contribute upstream to OpenSearch and Apache Lucene

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
