Job description

The Lead AI Research Scientist role at AMD focuses on recursive self-improvement in AI systems, emphasizing safety and governance. The position involves researching how models and data generators can enhance their own training processes while ensuring oversight and containment. The ideal candidate will connect theoretical concepts to practical metrics, contributing to AMD's AI-for-HW and generative-AI initiatives. This role is integral to advancing the company's mission of innovation in next-generation computing.

Requirements

  • Strong background in machine learning, AI safety, reinforcement learning, or a related field.
  • Experience with empirical safety evaluation, scalable oversight, or stress-testing of generative model training pipelines.
  • Strong software skills for building controlled experimental harnesses and reproducible RSI microcosms.
  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Research self-improving training loops, including model-generated supervision and automated curriculum updates.
  • Develop evaluations for capability drift, Goodhart effects, and distributional shift in closed-loop training.
  • Partner with reinforcement learning scientists on the intersection of RSI-style objectives and policy optimization.
  • Define red-team protocols and monitoring for RSI pilots, documenting rollback criteria before experiments.
  • Publish or produce technical reports and align internal narratives with responsible deployment standards.

Benefits

  • AMD provides a competitive 'Total Rewards' package that focuses on financial growth, health, and work-life balance.
