Job description

The Battery Cell Modeling Engineer at Rivian is a senior-level position within the Battery Cell Engineering team, focusing on developing validated P2D models for characterizing the DCFC capability of battery cells. This role emphasizes a first-principles approach to modeling heat generation and integrating cell models into broader battery thermal management systems. The engineer will act as a primary technical contact for active programs, ensuring accurate representation of cell models in vehicle performance targets. The position requires a strong background in modeling complex physical systems and a passion for innovation in battery technology.

Requirements

  • M.S. or PhD in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of academic or industry experience in modeling complex physical systems.
  • Mastery of lithium-ion battery operating principles.
  • Expertise in P2D modeling, charge transport, and reaction kinetics.
  • Strong instincts for automation and building scalable modeling frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and validation of P2D and electrochemical-thermal models for fast-charge boundaries.
  • Use a first-principles approach to analyze heat generation mechanisms in battery cells.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for active programs, ensuring accurate cell model representation.
  • Champion an automation-first mindset to enhance simulation efficiency and standardization.
  • Collaborate with thermal and system engineers to integrate cell models into battery thermal management systems.
