JobsOptical Sensing PD - Mechanical Engineer
Job description
The Optical Sensing Product Design team is looking for a mechanical engineer to contribute to the development of sensors that enhance user interaction with technology. This role involves collaborating with a diverse team to specify, develop, characterize, and validate mechanical designs for optical sensing systems. The engineer will lead the design and validation of spectral sensing technology for Apple's product portfolio. Ultimately, the engineer's work will impact millions of users by improving their daily experiences.
Requirements
- Minimum requirement of a bachelor's degree.
- Experience in the design of miniature components or opto-mechanical modules.
- Proficient in 3D CAD design, preferably NX.
- Experience with statistical tools and techniques such as Matlab, Python, or JMP.
- Mechanical and manufacturing experience related to optical elements and optical sensing systems.
- Simulation experience in FEA for structural or thermal design.
- Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analyses, and manufacturing processes for sensors.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end design, development, and validation of spectral sensing technology.
- Collaborate with a multifunctional team to generate and validate design concepts.
- Identify design tradeoffs and risks to ensure a great customer experience.
- Design optical modules and packaging while meeting system integration requirements.
- Apply experimental design and the scientific method to mitigate design risks early.
- Work with manufacturing partners to address design manufacturability and mechanical issues.
- Support external manufacturing vendors with process development and root cause analysis.
- Travel internationally between 10% and 25% for project-related activities.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
