Job description
The senior data engineer will join Apple's Battery Engineering team to build data systems and an AI interface that supports battery engineers across the company. This role involves expanding the Battery Data Warehouse and developing BARD, a natural language interface that enhances data interaction for engineers. The position requires a blend of data engineering and AI engineering skills, with a focus on building reliable data pipelines and improving user experience through innovative AI solutions. The engineer will work closely with various teams to ensure data integrity and foster collaboration.
Requirements
- BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Experience with Python, SQL, and at least one other high-level programming language
- Experience building production data pipelines (ETL/ELT)
- MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience
- Strong database fundamentals including data modeling, schema design, indexing, normalization, ACID, and OLTP vs. OLAP
- Hands-on database development experience including DML, DDL, materialized views, and stored procedures
- Experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow and cloud platforms like AWS
- Deep curiosity about AI and hands-on experience applying it
- Experience securing AI/LLM systems that process sensitive or regulated data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
- Familiarity with batteries or other deep-tech / hardware engineering domains
Responsibilities
- Expand the Battery Data Warehouse by building reliable data pipelines from disparate systems.
- Earn the trust of source-system owners and establish SLAs to maintain data integrity.
- Develop BARD, the natural language interface to the Battery Data Warehouse.
- Engineer the full agentic stack including custom MCP server and domain knowledge.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive projects forward.
- Take ownership of projects while aligning with team goals and direction.
