Job description

The Senior Power Electronics Engineer at Rivian will focus on designing and developing high-power electrical circuits for off-board charging products. This role is part of a diverse team that values innovation and environmental sustainability. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to create state-of-the-art charging solutions. The position is based in Torrance, CA, and reports to the Sr. Director of Electrical Design.

Requirements

  • Minimum M.S. in Electrical Engineering plus 3+ years of relevant industry experience, specializing in power electronics.
  • Familiarity with common topologies such as multi-phase boost PFC, dual active bridge converter, and LLC.
  • Expertise in high-power EV charger or energy storage, stationary-related power converters preferred.
  • Solid understanding of power semiconductor switches and diodes, and their characteristics.
  • Strong experience designing and analyzing inverter and converter circuits, including gate drivers.
  • Familiarity with embedded control of power electronic circuits.
  • Experience with bidirectional AC/DC or DC/DC power conversion.
  • Experience using software tools such as Spice, PLECS, Mathcad, Ansys, and Matlab.
  • Experience using FEA simulation tools such as Ansys Maxwell/Q3D or equivalent.
  • PCB layout experience using Altium.
  • Exposure to EMC requirements and safety certification.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop high-power electrical circuits, such as active rectifiers, inverters, and DCDC converters.
  • Perform circuit design, component selection, schematic creation, PCBA layout, and magnetic design.
  • Conduct trade studies for key decisions.
  • Simulate circuits using Matlab, PLECS, and other tools.
  • Analyze structures and magnetic components such as bus bars and high-frequency transformers/inductors.
  • Design EMI/EMC filters.
  • Interact with suppliers on critical components.
  • Test prototype power electronics circuits in the lab.
  • Characterize power semiconductor devices, including Silicon, SiC, and GaN.
  • Engage with multiple cross-functional teams, including Mechanical, Software and Controls, Systems, Test, Quality, Reliability, and Manufacturing.
