Job description

The Staff Functional Safety Engineer at DeepMind will play a crucial role in defining and implementing the functional safety architecture for high-performance robotics platforms. This position involves collaboration with research teams to develop safety architectures and ensure compliance with safety standards. The engineer will bridge high-level safety architectures with concrete deliverables, focusing on the integration of AI into physical robotics. The role emphasizes the importance of safety and ethics in AI development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with systems automation, design, and implementation.
  • 8 years of experience with technical infrastructure including deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • 3 years of experience working with system safety or functional safety projects and familiarity with functional safety standards.
  • Experience with functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 13849, ISO 26262, and similar frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement hardware and firmware safety features, including safety islands and fallback mechanisms.
  • Conduct FMEDA and fault injection campaigns to evaluate diagnostics.
  • Lead testing and validation to ensure compliance with safety metrics and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with research teams to define safety goals, concepts, and cases.
  • Guide engineering teams through safety and reliability methodologies and perform structured root cause analysis.
