Job description

Tesla is looking for a Battery Launch Engineer to enhance product quality for Megapack and other energy storage products. This position is integral to the factory floor, acting as a liaison between design, manufacturing, and quality teams. The engineer will address production issues, investigate field failures, and implement solutions that may involve design changes or process updates. Strong mechanical design skills and manufacturing awareness are essential for success in this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience with 3+ years of mechanical design experience.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in material science, heat transfer, mechanics, and fluids.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX.
  • Familiarity with design for reliability concepts and PLM systems.
  • Comfortable using data analysis tools such as Excel, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Excellent problem-solving instincts and communication skills.
  • Experience with launch, NPI, or manufacturing/quality/process engineering in a high-volume production environment is a plus.
  • Experience with energy storage systems or battery cell manufacturing is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the design team's representative in the factory, collaborating with manufacturing, process, and quality teams.
  • Support product ramp from initial to mature builds, optimizing designs for manufacturability and assembly.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design intent and quality standards.
  • Debug production issues in real time and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Own sustaining mechanical design changes based on production feedback.
  • Review parts and production output to identify potential issues.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on field quality issues and drive corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute design validation plans and test methods.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation including design change records and SOPs.
  • Travel as needed to support supplier quality and launch activities.
