Job description
Tesla is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead cell benchmarking and teardown, focusing on material-level characterization and post-mortem analysis of battery cells. This role is critical for understanding emerging cell technologies and evaluating performance against industry standards. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in cell disassembly and electrochemical analysis, translating complex findings into actionable insights. The position requires a self-motivated engineer who thrives in fast-paced environments and drives data-driven decisions.
Requirements
- Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years in battery cell teardown, post-mortem analysis, or materials characterization
- Deep expertise in material characterization techniques for lithium-ion battery materials
- Strong understanding of lithium-ion cell components and their performance implications
- Proficiency in electrochemical testing and data analysis
- Strong data analysis skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar
- Proven ability to translate complex data into actionable recommendations
- Experience handling air-sensitive materials in controlled environments
- Excellent communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences
- Self-directed with the ability to design experiments and execute independently
Responsibilities
- Lead teardown and characterization of state-of-the-art commercial cells
- Conduct comprehensive post-mortem analysis on aged, failed, or cycled cells
- Perform material-level characterization using various techniques to evaluate components
- Benchmark cell performance against industry standards
- Compare material properties across suppliers and provide data-driven recommendations
- Develop standardized benchmarking protocols and characterization workflows
- Identify performance differentiators and improvement opportunities through data analysis
- Synthesize findings into clear, actionable reports and presentations
- Collaborate cross-functionally to integrate benchmarking insights into development strategy
- Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to identify opportunities and risks
