Job description

The Bay Area R&D and Facilities team is seeking a highly motivated Controls Engineer to address challenges in the transition to sustainable energy. This role involves collaboration with design, construction, and commissioning teams throughout the project lifecycle. The engineer will focus on automation, controls, and instrumentation design, ensuring compliance with safety and cybersecurity standards. The position also includes mentoring junior engineers and optimizing process systems for improved performance.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of design experience with instrumentation, controls, and process automation
  • Experience with Siemens PLC and Ignition SCADA systems
  • Experience supporting a 24/7 production/manufacturing facility is preferred
  • Additional experience working with PLC platforms such as Siemens, Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, and Omron
  • Experience with modern communication protocols including Profinet, EtherCAT, Ethernet IP, and Modbus TCP
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated experience in executing controls projects from concept to commissioning
  • Experience participating in process hazard reviews and HazOps
  • Experience with safety rated systems

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain automation, controls, and instrumentation design standards and best practices
  • Oversee development and review of control philosophies, P&IDs, I/O lists, network architectures, and logic designs
  • Coordinate automation activities across engineering, operations, maintenance, and IT/OT stakeholders
  • Mentor and develop automation engineers, designers, and specialists
  • Lead the control system architecture design including integration of HMI, SCADA, PLC, VFDs, and safety PLCs
  • Develop greenfield PLC code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable
  • Work closely with process design teams to develop process control narratives and diagrams
  • Develop plant-wide supervisory systems to minimize unplanned downtime and centralize performance monitoring
  • Implement and manage continuous process optimization to improve quality and reduce waste
  • Travel for FAT and equipment installation and commissioning as needed
