Job description
The role is focused on owning ClickHouse as a core platform within Tesla's Factory Software team, which builds systems for factory operations. The engineer will be responsible for designing and maintaining data ingestion pipelines, ensuring high-throughput analytics, and enabling AI agents to make autonomous decisions. This position emphasizes platform engineering rather than IT support, with a direct impact on production output across Tesla's manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with ClickHouse and a strong understanding of data modeling and distributed systems.
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of backend or data engineering experience, with 2+ years of hands-on ClickHouse in production
- Deep understanding of ClickHouse internals including MergeTree family engines and query optimization
- Strong proficiency in SQL for analytical workloads and at least one systems/backend language such as Go, Python, Rust, or C#
- Experience with streaming data ingestion technologies like Kafka or Kinesis
- Solid grasp of distributed systems fundamentals including consistency trade-offs and fault tolerance
- Hands-on experience enabling AI/ML workloads with data infrastructure
- Experience deploying and operating data services on Kubernetes with strong observability practices
- Ability to work across engineering teams as a platform owner
- Thrive in a high-autonomy, fast-moving environment
Responsibilities
- Own the design, deployment, and operation of ClickHouse clusters across factory software applications
- Build and maintain high-throughput data ingestion pipelines from factory systems and IoT devices into ClickHouse
- Define data modeling standards and query patterns for consistent access across engineering teams
- Design and expose data access layers that AI agents can reliably query and act on
- Collaborate with application engineers to migrate existing workloads to ClickHouse
- Instrument and own observability for the data platform including query performance and cluster health
- Deploy and operate data platform services on Kubernetes with full CI/CD ownership
- Drive adoption across the engineering organization through documentation and hands-on enablement
- Stay current with the ClickHouse ecosystem and evaluate new capabilities
Benefits
- Employees at Tesla are often offered day-one coverage with multiple medical options (some at $0 paycheck cost), dental/vision, company HSA contributions, a 401(k) match, and equity programs. Most roles also include paid time off and holidays, family-building support, employee assistance, commuter and childcare benefits, and access to discounts and wellness programs.
