Job description

Meta is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the software architecture for intelligent devices that integrate custom silicon and cloud services. This role involves bridging low-level hardware abstraction, Android platform software, and scalable backend infrastructure to create seamless user experiences. The engineer will tackle complex technical challenges and drive initiatives that require collaboration across silicon, device software, and cloud teams. The position demands expertise in embedded systems and distributed backend services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems software engineering, particularly in on-device and backend systems.
  • Experience leading complex initiatives that span hardware, software, and cloud boundaries.
  • Deep understanding of Android platform internals, including system services and HAL interfaces.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for on-device systems programming and Java/Kotlin or Python/C++ for backend development.
  • Experience with custom silicon or SoC platforms, including hardware bring-up and driver integration.
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale backend services.
  • Track record of solving complex technical problems across multiple systems and teams.
  • Experience with system-level debugging across the full stack.
  • Experience shipping consumer devices or embedded systems at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the end-to-end system architecture spanning on-device software and backend services.
  • Lead the design and implementation of platform software that utilizes Meta's custom SoC capabilities.
  • Own the resolution of complex technical problems that cross the device-cloud boundary.
  • Architect backend services that support on-device workloads, optimizing for scale and efficiency.
  • Drive performance optimization across the full stack, including silicon-aware scheduling and backend service latency.
  • Partner with silicon and hardware teams to define software requirements for Meta's custom SoC.
  • Establish system-level metrics and reliability frameworks for end-to-end observability.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with various teams to align technical strategies and unblock dependencies.
  • Communicate architecture decisions and technical trade-offs to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Leverage AI tools and workflows to enhance development and system analysis.

Benefits

  • Employees at Meta are often offered comprehensive benefits, including medical/dental/vision coverage, mental-health resources, family planning support (fertility, adoption, surrogacy), and caregiving programs. Financial benefits typically include a competitive retirement plan, equity awards, life insurance, and access to financial coaching and legal support. Time-off benefits commonly feature generous PTO and holidays, unlimited sick time, various paid leaves, flexible “Global Travel Days,” and a 30-day paid break every five years.
