Job description
The Member of Technical Staff — Mechanical Engineer will lead the structural and electromechanical design of advanced high degree-of-freedom robotic systems in a cutting-edge AI and robotics research lab. This role involves owning the mechanical architecture of the robotics platform, ensuring it is lightweight, robust, and production-viable. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in designing complex robotic systems and will work closely with a small team of mechanical engineers and cross-functional teams. This position offers the opportunity to innovate in areas such as novel actuation methods and advanced sensor integration.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
- 6 to 10+ years in designing mechanical systems for robotics or complex electromechanical products.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or OnShape.
- Hands-on experience building prototypes and troubleshooting mechanical/electromechanical issues.
- Understanding of actuator and motor selection for complex robotic applications.
- Experience with wire/cable harness design and routing in compact mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with integrating sensing and compute elements into mechanical designs.
- Experience with structural analysis practices and tools such as FEA/Ansys.
- Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production.
Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design of robotic subsystems and full platforms.
- Own kinematic, dynamic, and structural analyses to guide design and optimization.
- Specify and integrate actuators and motors for high-torque density applications.
- Drive rapid iteration and prototyping cycles to accelerate learning.
- Partner with the AI research team to establish simulation pipelines.
- Contribute to thermal management strategies for motors and sensors.
- Integrate sensors into compact, functional assemblies.
- Design and route cabling and wire harnesses for reliability and serviceability.
- Prototype and test mechanical systems, supporting hands-on builds.
- Conduct root cause analysis on system-level failures and implement design improvements.
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
