The Hardware Development Engineer I (HDE I) role focuses on the research, design, and development of electrical and controls sub-components for material handling systems. This entry-level position offers hands-on experience in power distribution, controls design, and industrial communication protocols. The engineer will work closely with senior team members and cross-functional teams to deliver quality designs while learning industry standards. Ideal candidates are passionate about customer-focused design and eager to contribute to the development of innovative material handling capabilities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent.
- 2+ years of hardware design and validation of components, subsystems, and systems experience.
- Knowledge of engineering practices for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle.
- Experience with hardware/software integration and real-time systems.
- Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) or tolerance analysis.
- Familiarity with UL 508A panel design standards or NFPA 70E.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the design of electrical sub-components for power and controls systems related to material handling projects.
- Support the development of electrical layouts, schematics, and panel designs under guidance from senior engineers.
- Design hardware sub-components that match defined specifications and requirements.
- Learn and apply modular and scalable design principles that prioritize reliability, maintainability, and performance.
- Develop component and assembly drawings, bill of materials, and supporting documentation using CAD modelling software.
- Support the design and implementation of industrial communication networks under senior engineer guidance.
- Assist in developing control system architectures incorporating IPCs, PLCs, and SCADA systems.
- Build and test prototypes of electrical and controls sub-components to validate designs against specifications.
- Evaluate designs through analysis and testing; troubleshoot and resolve defects when problems arise.
- Work with suppliers to understand feasibility of fabrication and manufacturing.
- Support compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable standards.
- Document research, design alternatives considered, and reasons for rejection clearly.
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
