The Hardware Development Engineer I (HDE I) role focuses on the research, design, and development of electrical and controls sub-components for material handling systems. This entry-level position allows engineers to solve hardware-related engineering problems while gaining hands-on experience in power distribution and controls design. The ideal candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams and learn industry standards and best practices. This role is perfect for an early-career engineer eager to contribute to customer-focused designs and develop foundational engineering skills.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics, or equivalent.
- 2+ years of hardware design and validation experience.
- 3+ years of experience in material handling equipment or automation environments.
- 2+ years of PLC/SCADA integration experience or a relevant degree.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles including switchgear, UPS, transformers, and circuit breakers.
- Experience with AutoCAD 3D and design, wire-framing, and prototyping tools.
- Familiarity with UL 508A panel design standards or NFPA 70E.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the design of electrical sub-components for power and controls systems.
- Support the development of electrical layouts, schematics, and panel designs.
- Design hardware sub-components that meet defined specifications and requirements.
- Learn and apply modular and scalable design principles prioritizing reliability and performance.
- Support the design and implementation of industrial communication networks.
- Assist in developing control system architectures incorporating IPCs, PLCs, and SCADA systems.
- Build and test prototypes of electrical and controls sub-components.
- Evaluate designs through analysis and testing, troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Work with suppliers to understand feasibility of fabrication and manufacturing.
- Support compliance with the National Electrical Code and other applicable standards.
- Document research, design alternatives, and communicate findings to stakeholders.
