Job description

The Applied AI Scientist role at Apple focuses on advancing generative AI and multimodal foundation models within the Multimodal Intelligence Team. This position offers the opportunity to bridge the gap between research and practical applications, working alongside accomplished scientists and engineers. The team is dedicated to developing innovative solutions that leverage Apple's sensing hardware and large foundation models. Candidates will engage in applied research and collaborate across various teams to deliver groundbreaking products and experiences.

Requirements

  • Experience in deep learning with demonstrated work in at least one area of multimodal systems such as vision, language, or video.
  • Proficiency in Python and in a modern deep learning framework such as PyTorch or JAX.
  • Master's or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or a related technical field.
  • PhD or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related technical field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in deep learning with either a publication record in relevant conferences or a strong track record of applying deep learning techniques to real-world products.
  • Experience with foundation models, either language or multimodal.
  • Familiarity with large-scale data pipelines, including data curation, preprocessing, and efficient storage.
  • Experience fine-tuning or optimizing large models for production deployment.
  • Experience applying foundation models to build autonomous or semi-autonomous agents, including planning, task decomposition, and multi-step reasoning.
  • Familiarity with privacy-preserving or on-device machine learning.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-functional, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and adapt emerging research in generative AI and multimodal foundation models.
  • Conduct applied research experiments to test and validate new ideas.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to transform promising research approaches into robust solutions.
  • Consider future hardware design and product needs in the development process.
  • Engage and collaborate with several teams across Apple to deliver the best products.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
