Job description

The Mechanical Design Engineer role at Meta focuses on Robot Design within the Robotics Hardware team. This position requires expertise in advanced complex surface modeling and design for safety, bridging mechanical and industrial design. The engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design of structural components and ensuring safety during human-robot interaction. This role involves working in a fast-paced environment with high ambiguity, contributing to innovative projects aimed at advancing human connection through technology.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field
  • 8+ years of mechanical design experience with significant work in complex surface modeling
  • Strong CAD proficiency in SolidWorks, NX, or CREO, Rhino
  • Working knowledge of CNC machining processes
  • Experience with rapid prototyping manufacturing processes and materials
  • Experience designing exterior enclosures or covers for electromechanical products with high aesthetic standards
  • Working knowledge of mechanical safety principles
  • Familiarity with injection molding, thermoforming, or composite manufacturing
  • Ability to interpret and apply GD&T for sculptural parts
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Experience managing time-sensitive projects
  • Experience in tolerance analysis and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Background in high-mix/low-volume transitioning to mid-volume production environments

Responsibilities

  • Translate industrial design intent into CAD geometry with complex surface construction
  • Build and maintain Class-A and high-quality B-surface models for robot panels and housings
  • Manage the tension between aesthetic design intent, safety, and manufacturing feasibility
  • Develop parametric surfacing strategies for rapid iteration on form
  • Define and enforce safe-by-design guidelines for mechanical components
  • Design protective structures that limit contact force during human-robot interaction
  • Conduct and maintain risk assessments to identify hazards from moving parts
  • Perform hand calculations and FEA for impact and crush scenarios
  • Collaborate with controls and firmware teams to ensure mechanical safety features complement electronic systems
  • Support safety certification efforts by preparing design evidence packages and compliance documentation
  • Investigate and resolve safety-related findings from testing and user studies
  • Define and enforce surface quality standards for design intent
  • Work closely with DFMA engineers and molding vendors to ensure manufacturability of complex surfaces
  • Generate and manage scan-to-CAD workflows for physical models or prototypes
  • Produce rendered visualizations and surface analysis outputs to communicate design quality
  • Partner with industrial designers to develop safe and aesthetically pleasing forms
  • Collaborate with mechanical design engineers on structural integration
  • Work with materials engineers on surface material selection
  • Support user research and human factors teams with physical mock-ups for validation

Benefits

  • Employees at Meta are often offered comprehensive benefits, including medical/dental/vision coverage, mental-health resources, family planning support (fertility, adoption, surrogacy), and caregiving programs. Financial benefits typically include a competitive retirement plan, equity awards, life insurance, and access to financial coaching and legal support. Time-off benefits commonly feature generous PTO and holidays, unlimited sick time, various paid leaves, flexible “Global Travel Days,” and a 30-day paid break every five years.
