Job description
The Senior Data Engineering Manager at Apple will lead a team responsible for the data lake that supports capacity engineering for Apple's services. This hands-on leadership role involves overseeing the ingestion pipelines, data models, and analytics that inform critical capacity decisions. The manager will ensure data quality and governance while collaborating with various teams across the organization. This position is essential for building foundational systems that enhance capacity availability and operational efficiency.
Requirements
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of engineering leadership experience, including hiring, mentoring, and growing engineers.
- Strong, hands-on data engineering background in designing and operating data lakes and large-scale ingestion/ETL pipelines.
- Experience with modern big-data and data-lake technologies such as Spark, Databricks, and Hadoop.
- Ability to remain technically hands-on and lead architecture reviews.
- Strong data-analysis instincts to derive and communicate business insights from complex data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness and ability to be based in Seattle and lead a geographically distributed team.
- Experience managing across locations and time zones.
- Domain experience in cloud infrastructure and capacity planning.
Responsibilities
- Lead the data engineering team responsible for the capacity data lake.
- Set the technical direction for data ingestion, modeling, governance, and accessibility.
- Ensure high standards of data quality and reliability.
- Collaborate closely with forecasting, finance, and platform teams.
- Act as a visible technical contributor, engaging deeply with architecture and data models.
- Build foundational capacity-data systems that are critical for Apple's infrastructure.
- Manage and mentor engineers to foster their growth and development.
- Introduce AI/LLM-assisted tooling into data engineering workflows.
- Establish systems and processes where they do not yet exist.
