Job description

The Optical Engineering team within Camera Core Technology Engineering at Apple is seeking a Simulation Development Engineer. This role focuses on developing advanced modeling and simulation solutions for Optical Imaging Systems, facilitating early feedback to product design. The engineer will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and will be responsible for the validation and scaling of simulation tools. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in a challenging environment and is eager to innovate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Optics, Imaging Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant field of study.
  • Programming experience in Python, Matlab, and/or C/C++/C#.
  • Experience modeling and simulating optical systems using tools like Zemax or Code V.
  • MS or PhD in Optical Sciences, Imaging Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience developing software for optical, imaging, or photonics systems.
  • Proficiency in software engineering best practices including version control (Git), unit testing, CI/CD, release distribution, and documentation.
  • Familiarity with imaging system performance metrics such as PSF, MTF, wavefront error, and optical aberrations.
  • Experience deploying simulation or modeling workloads on cloud or HPC platforms such as AWS or GCP.
  • Ability to present technical findings and simulation results to cross-functional hardware and product teams.
  • Familiarity with Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V, or similar tools, with experience in scripting or extending these platforms programmatically being a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop state-of-the-art end-to-end modeling and simulation solutions for Optical Imaging Systems.
  • Facilitate early feedback to Apple product design through simulation tools.
  • Validate and scale up simulation tools for future technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to solve challenging problems.
  • Present technical findings and simulation results to hardware and product teams.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
