Job description
Apple is looking for an optical engineer to help translate next-generation display technologies into reality. This role involves bridging design, testing, and manufacturing by validating optical simulation models against real-world performance. The engineer will own the optical models that ensure accuracy in design iterations and predictive performance capabilities. The position requires strong cross-functional leadership skills and a deep understanding of optical engineering.
Requirements
- BS in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience
- Established track record of correlating optical simulations with measured hardware performance in industry or R&D settings
- Proficiency with one or more optical simulation tools such as LightTools, FDTD, RCWA, Zemax, or Code V
- Hands-on experience in at least one area including optical design/metrology, display technologies, optical sensors, thin-film processes, or nanofabrication
- Masters or PhD in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- Experience with metasurfaces, diffractive optics, waveguide design, or consumer optical product development
- Experience with engineering builds, managing cross-phase deliverables, high-volume manufacturing, or module integration
- Self-driven with excellent project management skills and meticulous attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of optical measurement systems including light sources, microscopes, spectrometers, detectors, and free-space optics
- Statistical data analysis capabilities using tools such as JMP, Matlab, or Python
Responsibilities
- Bridge design, testing, and manufacturing by validating optical simulation models
- Own the end-to-end optical models that validate measured module performance
- Continuously improve design iteration accuracy and enable predictive performance capability
- Establish new validation methodologies and shape technical direction across the organization
- Define engineering builds, design experiments, and conduct failure mode analysis
- Translate technical findings into actionable design guidance
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
