Amazon Robotics is looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer with expertise in Rust to lead the development of safety-rated sensor processing firmware for autonomous robots. The role involves setting technical direction for major subsystems and collaborating with various teams to ensure safety and reliability. The Safety Perception team focuses on applying advances in robotics and sensor processing to real-world challenges, emphasizing correctness in embedded systems. This position requires a technical leader who can mentor engineers and drive perception features under strict safety standards.
Requirements
- 6+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 6+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 6+ years of leading design or architecture of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
- Proficiency in embedded development in Rust or strong modern C/C++ embedded experience with willingness to work in Rust
- 6+ years of full software development life cycle experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Experience developing RTOS applications or bare-metal real-time systems
- Experience with heterogeneous multi-core platforms
- Experience with general troubleshooting and debugging of hardware
- Experience writing low-level drivers
- Experience with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, or similar RPC/serialization frameworks
- Familiarity developing embedded software in a safety-standards-controlled environment
- Working knowledge of 3D geometry, coordinate transforms, or point cloud processing
- Experience with robotics middleware or visualization tools
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and architecture of major safety-rated and non-safety-rated firmware subsystems in Rust.
- Set technical direction across the full sensor processing pipeline and influence peer teams.
- Own the team's hardest end-to-end problems and frame solutions where the technical strategy is unclear.
- Drive perception features that ensure data integrity under IEC 61508 certification.
- Raise the technical bar through design and code reviews and mentor engineers.
- Produce direction-setting design documents and safety analysis artifacts.
- Lead debugging and root-cause analysis from raw sensor data to safety responses.
- Leverage AI coding assistants to enhance team productivity.
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
