This role involves setting the architecture for controllers and namespace management infrastructure while ensuring the reliability of Kubernetes services. The engineer will engage with the upstream community to drive Apple's requirements and mentor other engineers. Additionally, there is an opportunity to develop AI-assisted tooling for operational workflows and infrastructure automation.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, an engineering-related field, or equivalent related experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Deep experience building and operating core components of Kubernetes or a comparable orchestration system in production at scale.
- Expert-level proficiency in Golang with a track record of shipping and owning controllers or operators.
- Experience leading a technical effort spanning several teams with competing priorities.
- Accepted contributions to upstream Kubernetes or a comparable open source project.
Responsibilities
- Own the architecture and technical direction for controllers and namespace management infrastructure.
- Find and fix reliability problems that arise beyond upstream defaults and automate operational loads.
- Set reliability standards for the platform, including SLOs, error budgets, and alerting philosophy.
- Take on-call duties and lead incident response for critical production issues.
- Represent Apple in the upstream Kubernetes community and drive requirements through design proposals.
- Grow engineers through mentoring, design review, and code review.
- Lead cross-team technical efforts and advise partner service teams on platform capabilities.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
