Job description

The Senior Scientist in the Transitional and Early Development team at Elanco will serve as a strategic and technical leader focused on the transition from early research to development. This role involves leading early-formulation work to identify optimal formulations for physical stability of lead molecules. The scientist will drive biophysical characterization and formulation selection for diverse biopharmaceutical modalities, including monoclonal antibodies. The position requires collaboration with various teams and a commitment to innovation in animal health.

Requirements

  • PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
  • 3+ years of biopharmaceutical industry experience with a specific focus on protein formulation and characterization.
  • Proven experience leading formulation projects from concept through execution.
  • Deep expertise in protein chemistry, physical biochemistry, and colloidal science.
  • Hands-on mastery of protein characterization techniques such as DLS/Zetasizer, DSC, DSF, SEC, and spectroscopy.
  • Excellent scientific communication skills and a strong foundation in data integrity practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead formulation programs for lead molecules, applying deep expertise in protein chemistry and thermodynamics.
  • Direct and mentor a small characterization team while establishing robust analytical workflows.
  • Identify and mitigate formulation-related risks such as aggregation, precipitation, and viscosity.
  • Evaluate and implement novel formulation technologies and high-throughput screening platforms.
  • Serve as the technical formulation lead on concurrent project teams, interfacing with various departments.
  • Maintain exemplary ELN documentation, author technical reports, and provide data-driven recommendations.

Benefits

  • Employees at Elanco are often offered competitive compensation with annual bonus and equity eligibility, retirement plans (including a U.S. 401(k)), and comprehensive health coverage—medical, dental, vision, company-paid life and disability—and even pet insurance. Time-off and flexibility typically include generous PTO, U.S. mid-year and year-end paid shutdown weeks, parental leave, and flexible/remote work options. Employees also benefit from strong development programs (onboarding, course libraries, mentorship, nine ERGs, and tiered leadership programs) that support both professional growth and community involvement.
