Job description

Amazon Web Services is seeking a Software Development Engineer II to join the Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) team in Seattle. This role focuses on building and operating the compute infrastructure for EKS, which automates Kubernetes cluster management. The team is dedicated to creating innovative solutions that enhance customer experiences while managing complex distributed systems. Candidates will have the opportunity to work on industry-defining projects and contribute to a culture of inclusion and mentorship.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience of new and existing systems
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, or Rust
  • Experience in Kubernetes, Docker, or the containers ecosystem
  • Knowledge of and experience with cloud infrastructure technologies
  • Experience in Linux OS and network troubleshooting
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as CloudFormation, Terraform, or CDK
  • Track record of delivering complex, ambiguous projects with minimal guidance
  • Experience with hybrid or edge computing architectures
  • Contributions to open-source projects, especially in the Kubernetes/CNCF ecosystem
  • Strong operational mindset with experience in monitoring and incident management at scale

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with experienced cross-disciplinary teams to design and bring innovative products to market.
  • Architect and implement scalable, highly available distributed systems for EKS.
  • Own the operational health of services handling millions of customer workloads.
  • Lead the design and implementation of complex features from requirements through deployment.
  • Work deeply with Kubernetes internals, controllers, and APIs.
  • Partner with other teams to deliver integrated, customer-centric solutions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and conduct thorough code reviews.
  • Drive improvements in CI/CD pipelines and incident response processes.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify customer experiences and reduce operational burdens.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
