The Automation Controls Engineer will serve as the primary controls subject matter expert within the New Technology Introduction team, focusing on emerging automation and robotics technologies. This role involves identifying gaps in control systems, collaborating with development teams, and evolving standards to ensure robust solutions. The engineer will engage with various stakeholders to represent control system requirements and mentor future team members. The position requires travel across North America and potentially internationally.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related fields.
- 3+ years of experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms).
- 3+ years of automation controls engineering experience in manufacturing, logistics, automation, or industrial environments.
- Experience designing and implementing control systems for complex automated equipment.
- 5+ years of working directly with engineering teams on technology development or integration projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or relevant controls certifications (Rockwell, Siemens, etc.).
- Technical understanding of robotics system components/controls, HMI components, and control network components.
Responsibilities
- Lead controls system design reviews for new automation and robotics technologies.
- Define and maintain control system standards, programming guidelines, and integration requirements.
- Evaluate PLC, HMI, and SCADA implementations against network standards and safety requirements.
- Partner with engineering teams, vendors, and stakeholders to represent control system requirements.
- Review electrical schematics, control panel designs, and network architectures.
- Investigate control system failures to identify root causes and drive solutions.
- Monitor control system performance metrics and drive improvements back into standards.
- Identify where control system architectures are overly complex or inconsistent and drive simplification.
