Job description
The Safety Engineer – Material Flow & Logistics Safety at Rivian is responsible for overseeing safety standards related to material handling and automated systems. This role requires extensive hands-on experience in logistics risk assessments and automated transport safety. The engineer will work closely with various teams to ensure compliance with industrial safety standards and develop a scalable logistics safety framework. The position is based in Normal, Illinois, with up to 40% travel for testing and audits.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Safety Engineering, Mechatronics, or related technical field.
- 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, industrial, or automotive/EV environments in a safety engineering, controls, or EHS engineering role.
- Hands-on experience performing machine/process risk assessments and implementing engineering controls.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA machinery regulations and key industry safety standards.
- Demonstrated experience running equipment risk assessments and safety validation for automated systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings and safety specifications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Lead risk evaluations focusing on facilities logistics and material handling routes.
- Define, implement, and audit safety parameters for shared worker/vehicle spaces.
- Specify, validate, and audit safety hardware and software systems on automated vehicles.
- Travel to vendor facilities for Factory Acceptance Testing to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Maintain, refine, and enforce internal machine safety and equipment standards.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to execute Safety Buyoff processes.
- Investigate technical safety failures and drive engineering countermeasures.
- Develop and deliver technical safety training for engineers and staff.
