Job description

The Firmware Engineer role at Microsoft involves developing and maintaining firmware and driver solutions for custom silicon platforms used in Azure infrastructure. The Host Services team focuses on optimizing hardware manufacturing and improving operational measures for Microsoft's cloud hardware. The position requires collaboration with various engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions that enhance the Azure fleet. Candidates should have a strong background in firmware development and a passion for customer-focused solutions.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in the same fields AND 4+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in the same fields AND 5+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience designing and developing firmware solutions.
  • 4+ years of experience in C, C++, and Rust, with a strong track record of delivering production-quality software.
  • 2+ years of experience with two or more industry-standard interfaces and protocols, including PCIe, I2C, SPI, USB, and UART.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain firmware and driver solutions for Microsoft custom silicon platforms.
  • Contribute across all phases of the product lifecycle, from architecture and design through silicon bring-up, validation, manufacturing, and productization.
  • Design and develop key firmware components, including driver interfaces and system libraries.
  • Participate in firmware architecture and technical design reviews to ensure high-performance solutions.
  • Drive hardware-software integration efforts to enable new silicon capabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with silicon, board electrical, and hardware engineering teams.
