Job description

The Optical Engineer role within the Release to Production New Product Introduction team at Meta focuses on driving optics validation and automating testing for optical communications modules. This position requires expertise in optical transceivers and Python scripting to ensure hardware stability and performance. The engineer will lead NPI programs, work closely with vendors and ODMs, and contribute to optical networking standards. The role also involves hands-on execution and collaboration across various engineering disciplines.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in development roles for optical networking hardware, with experience taking new optical products from development through volume production.
  • Demonstrated experience writing Python scripts to automate test and measurement, including instrument control, data acquisition, and data analysis in a lab environment.
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed optical and electrical test, test automation, and lab instrumentation.
  • Experience leading optical transceiver NPI programs with vendors and/or ODMs through EVT, DVT, PVT to MP.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Python scripts and test automation for qualification of optical transceivers and subsystems across EVT / DVT / PVT / characterization.
  • Lead optics NPI programs end to end, working closely with optics vendors and ODMs from RFI / RFP through EVT / DVT / PVT to mass production ramp.
  • Find, debug, and remediate optical hardware failure modes before certifying modules for mass production.
  • Drive root-cause analysis and corrective action with vendors and ODMs.
  • Set up and operate NPI test stations in Meta lab regions, integrating modules, switches, and instruments.
  • Define test and measurement methodologies for high-speed optical technologies and translate them into reusable Python scripts.
  • Develop instrument automation and integration using SCPI / VISA / PyVISA and vendor APIs.
  • Ensure new optical platforms are supported by production and fleet-health tooling.
  • Contribute to data integrity and analysis by building data capture, storage, and visualization.
  • Provide sustaining support after deployment to validate stability, security, and performance under production workloads.
  • Contribute to engineering standards for test automation and mentor engineers and technicians on best practices.
  • Collaborate across various engineering teams to integrate optics into systems.
  • Interface with the industry to contribute to the RFI / RFP process and shape product requirements.

Benefits

  • Employees at Meta are often offered comprehensive benefits, including medical/dental/vision coverage, mental-health resources, family planning support (fertility, adoption, surrogacy), and caregiving programs. Financial benefits typically include a competitive retirement plan, equity awards, life insurance, and access to financial coaching and legal support. Time-off benefits commonly feature generous PTO and holidays, unlimited sick time, various paid leaves, flexible “Global Travel Days,” and a 30-day paid break every five years.
