Job description
The role is for a senior kernel and performance engineer within the MTIA Software team at Meta, focusing on optimizing high-performance compute and communication kernels for AI accelerators. The team is responsible for building the entire software stack that supports Meta's in-house AI systems, including kernel authoring frameworks and libraries. The engineer will work closely with silicon architecture teams to ensure software and hardware co-design. This position requires a hands-on approach to tackle complex performance challenges across various AI workloads.
Requirements
- Proficiency in C++ and Python, including low-level systems programming and performance-critical code.
- Demonstrated experience writing and optimizing kernels for parallel architectures such as GPUs, TPUs, or SIMD/vector CPUs.
- Working knowledge of computer architecture as it applies to performance, including memory hierarchies and scheduling.
- A rigorous, measurement-driven approach to performance analysis.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and optimize high-performance compute and communication kernels for MTIA accelerators.
- Profile and root-cause performance across the full stack and drive fixes to the appropriate layer.
- Build and extend kernel authoring frameworks, templates, and libraries for high performance.
- Deliver and maintain broad kernel coverage for PyTorch operators across various AI workloads.
- Partner with silicon architecture and design teams on hardware/software co-design.
- Investigate numerics and precision trade-offs and design software mitigations for hardware limitations.
- Set technical direction for a kernel domain and mentor engineers on performance methodology.
Benefits
- Employees at Meta are often offered comprehensive benefits, including medical/dental/vision coverage, mental-health resources, family planning support (fertility, adoption, surrogacy), and caregiving programs. Financial benefits typically include a competitive retirement plan, equity awards, life insurance, and access to financial coaching and legal support. Time-off benefits commonly feature generous PTO and holidays, unlimited sick time, various paid leaves, flexible “Global Travel Days,” and a 30-day paid break every five years.
