Job description
The Test Engineer role at Tesla focuses on deploying, sustaining, and improving manufacturing test equipment for remanufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring test hardware and software performance, driving improvements in uptime, cycle time, and first-pass yield. This position requires hands-on technical expertise and effective communication skills in a fast-paced environment. The role involves collaboration with various engineering teams to meet production expectations and proactively address technical risks.
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical, Software, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of relevant experience in test equipment development, deployment, and optimization
- Hands-on experience with test and automation systems including sensors, data acquisition, safety circuits, I/O, PLCs, and industrial instrumentation
- Familiarity with high-voltage power electronics and/or battery systems is strongly preferred
- Ability to read and work with software, preferably Python, and contribute using git/version control
- Experience debugging common industrial communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, and RS-232/SPI
- Hands-on experience with electrical tools such as DMM, oscilloscope, and power supplies
- Solid understanding of production equipment design concerns including operator safety and usability
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities
- Willingness to support production operations outside standard hours when necessary
Responsibilities
- Deploy, validate, and sustain manufacturing test equipment for remanufacturing production lines
- Design and improve test equipment hardware with an emphasis on safety and serviceability
- Develop, maintain, and optimize production test software to enhance reliability and efficiency
- Lead improvements in uptime, cycle time, and first-pass yield on test equipment
- Troubleshoot and debug electrical, controls, and software issues as needed
- Collaborate with manufacturing, process, quality, controls, and maintenance engineering teams
- Partner with product and process design teams to define balanced test specifications
- Perform proactive data analysis on tester and product results to inform actions
- Identify technical risks early and prototype solutions to mitigate issues
- Document designs, procedures, qualifications, and handoffs for equipment sustainability
