Job description
The Satellite Connectivity Group at Apple is seeking a software engineer to develop automation and runtime infrastructure for their satellite network. This role involves working on critical connectivity services that enable communication for iPhone and Watch Ultra users in remote areas. The engineer will collaborate with hardware, cloud, and operations teams to ensure system health and reliability. The position emphasizes automation and the use of modern software practices to enhance operational efficiency.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including production Python
- Experience with developing automation of satellite constellations or fleets of autonomous vehicles/drones
- Ability to independently navigate and reason about large, unfamiliar code repositories
- Hands-on fluency with Linux and Mac OS, cloud service APIs, and modern command-line usage
- Experience working with CI and production CD pipelines for a software service
- Experience using design documents and ICDs as foundations for an operational service
- Experience operating a satellite constellation in production
- Embedded software development experience and hands-on work with hardware in a lab environment
- Working knowledge of RF and DSP concepts
- Experience leading or serving as a core member of a 24/7 operations team
- Experience building an SOP or runbook framework from scratch
- Experience leveraging AI tools to quickly reason about and prototype new systems
Responsibilities
- Build automation and runtime infrastructure for the satellite network.
- Collaborate with hardware, cloud, and operations teams on root-cause investigations.
- Develop, deploy, and maintain connectivity services end-to-end.
- Automate manual steps with tested code and create precise procedures for others.
- Work from design documents and interface control documents to guide development.
- Trace telemetry discrepancies and script new network test cases.
- Extend the continuous delivery pipeline for system health tooling.
- Write procedures to enable on-call engineers to resolve issues independently.
