Job description
The Architect role at Apple Pay focuses on setting the technical direction for the reliability, scalability, and availability of Apple Pay's distributed systems. This position requires a strong understanding of how distributed systems operate under various conditions and the ability to translate that knowledge into actionable architecture and practices. The Architect will work closely with multiple engineering teams to ensure that architecture decisions are practical and effective at a global scale. The role also emphasizes driving reliability engineering practices and observability strategies within a high-throughput, payment-critical infrastructure.
Requirements
- Proven track record designing and operating distributed systems at scale in high-throughput, low-latency production environments.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems fundamentals including replication, partitioning/sharding, and failure handling.
- Hands-on experience defining and instrumenting metrics for availability and scalability.
- Strong background in the building blocks of scalable systems such as load balancing and caching layers.
- Demonstrated ability to set technical direction across multiple teams without direct management authority.
- Experience with multi-region or globally distributed systems, including failover and disaster recovery design.
- Prior experience in payments, fraud/risk systems, or other regulated, high-availability financial infrastructure.
- Contributions to open-source distributed systems projects or published technical writing on the subject.
- Experience establishing or maturing a devops/reliability practice within an organization.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction for Apple Pay's distributed systems.
- Drive reliability engineering practices and observability strategy across the infrastructure.
- Review designs for resilience gaps and write code to validate architectural decisions.
- Lead incident reviews and postmortems to implement systemic fixes.
- Collaborate with client, server, devops, and product engineering teams to align architecture decisions with operational constraints.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
