Job description
The Energy Tech organization focuses on managing energy flow and thermals of Apple devices to enhance user experience. The team develops end-to-end solutions using on-device machine learning and control, impacting the behavior of Apple devices across product families. The role of Machine Learning Engineer involves analyzing field data, prototyping control and ML algorithms, and implementing them on-device. Candidates will tackle complex problems related to noisy sensors and competing objectives while ensuring solutions are suitable for constrained hardware.
Requirements
- MS or PhD in controls, robotics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, or a BS with relevant experience.
- Experience with model predictive control, optimal control, or reinforcement learning.
- Strong programming skills in Python and comfort with C/C++ for on-device work.
- Experience working with real-world sensor data that is noisy, incomplete, and high-volume.
- Demonstrated ability to take a project from data exploration through to a working prototype.
- Experience with thermal systems, battery management, or energy optimization.
- Familiarity with embedded or resource-constrained environments.
- Background in system identification or online parameter estimation.
- Comfort with ambiguity and ability to scope and drive work without detailed specifications.
- Track record of shipping models or control systems into production.
Responsibilities
- Analyze field data to understand device behavior.
- Prototype control and machine learning algorithms.
- Implement algorithms to run on-device.
- Develop models that capture device dynamics.
- Design cost functions that encode explicit priorities.
- Ship control loops that adapt to real-world conditions.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
