Job description

The Senior Data & Applied Scientist role at Microsoft's AI for CELA team focuses on applying advanced data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to enhance knowledge management and regulatory responses. The team aims to transform how legal and regulatory professionals capture and manage knowledge in a rapidly changing environment. This position involves building AI-enabled capabilities to improve workflows and decision-making processes. Successful candidates will work closely with legal experts and engineering teams to ensure responsible and effective AI solutions.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience OR Master's Degree in the same fields AND 3+ years data-science experience OR Bachelor's Degree in the same fields AND 5+ years data-science experience OR equivalent experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical analysis, experimentation, algorithms, machine learning, and AI.
  • Experience managing, transforming, and analyzing structured and unstructured data using SQL or related query languages and Python, R, or another relevant programming language.
  • Experience developing, evaluating, or operationalizing scalable machine learning or AI systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own complex data science engagements by translating ambiguous legal, knowledge-management, and regulatory problems into clear objectives and project plans.
  • Acquire, assess, and prepare structured and unstructured data from various sources while identifying data-quality and ethical risks.
  • Design, develop, and evaluate statistical, machine learning, and generative AI approaches for various applications.
  • Write efficient, readable, extensible, production-quality analysis and software code while diagnosing complex issues.
  • Define evaluation metrics and human-review workflows that connect technical performance to business value.
  • Build trusted partnerships with legal professionals, policy experts, engineers, and business stakeholders.
