Job description

The Senior Product Data Scientist for Google Messages, Spam and Abuse will focus on delivering critical insights and predictive models to protect users from spam and abuse. This role is part of the Android, Business, and Communications team, which aims to enhance communication experiences for nearly 2 billion active users. The position involves analyzing large-scale communication data and developing strategies to combat spam and malicious traffic. The successful candidate will bridge technical rigor with product execution to improve the messaging experience globally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
  • 8 years of work experience using analytics to solve product or business problems, performing statistical analysis, and coding in languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
  • Experience with A/B testing methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Define and track core metrics for spam prevalence, false positives, enforcement efficacy, and user impact.
  • Develop automated dashboards, anomaly detection alerts, and reporting pipelines to monitor ecosystem health in real time.
  • Design and execute A/B tests and counterfactual analyses to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of anti-spam rules, ML model updates, and UI interventions.
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Policy, and UX teams to identify spam trends and prioritize enforcement roadmaps.
  • Conduct exploratory data analyses on evolving adversarial behaviors in conversational messaging and present technical insights to stakeholders.
  • Evaluate and iterate on statistical models, heuristics, and classification algorithms to detect spam and unwanted traffic.
