Job description

The Apple Services Engineering (ASE) team is looking for a software engineer to enhance their batch-focused compute platform. This role involves developing data-driven features that improve decision-making for the platform, which runs millions of jobs daily. You will work end-to-end, from data analysis to production deployment, ensuring the efficiency and reliability of workloads. The position requires strong programming skills and a solid understanding of distributed systems.

Requirements

  • Strong programming skills in a general-purpose language such as Go, Python, or C++.
  • Working knowledge of distributed systems and operating system fundamentals.
  • Experience instrumenting large-scale infrastructure and analyzing performance data.
  • Ability to reason quantitatively about production data and its implications.
  • Track record of owning a project from an ambiguous problem statement through to production.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • BS in Computer Science or related fields with 3+ years of experience, or MS with 1+ years of experience, or PhD.
  • Experience building or operating a large-scale compute platform.

Responsibilities

  • Own features end to end that turn job behavior into decisions the platform acts on.
  • Implement changes across the stack, from platform services to node-level configurations.
  • Design and run validation in production, including shadow mode and staged rollouts.
  • Diagnose issues when predictions misbehave and help fix the underlying systems.
  • Write and review code and design documentation.
  • Engage directly with customers to understand their compute needs and analyze cluster utilization.
  • Bring quantitative analysis to team decisions regarding sizing and planning.
  • Participate in software qualifications and rollouts to production clusters.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for same-day resolution of platform issues.
  • Collaborate with various engineering teams across Apple to support their workflows.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
