Job description
As a Staff Software Engineer in AI Research Infrastructure at Databricks, you will develop and manage the research stack that supports AI model development. Your work will involve designing services for scheduling and orchestrating large-scale training and inference workloads across numerous GPUs. You will collaborate closely with research scientists and ML engineers to create robust pipelines and improve developer productivity. This role emphasizes operational excellence while enabling rapid experimentation and innovation in AI research.
Requirements
- BS/MS or PhD in Computer Science or a related field
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, particularly with large-scale distributed systems or infrastructure
- Deep experience in building and operating distributed systems, data pipelines, or large-scale backend services
- Proficiency in one or more systems programming languages such as C++, Rust, Go, Java, or Scala
- Experience with cluster schedulers, resource managers, or large-scale job orchestration systems
- Understanding of modern ML training and inference workflows
Responsibilities
- Design and implement infrastructure that supports large-scale experiments, data processing, and model training
- Enable researchers to transition from idea to large-scale experiment in minutes by building powerful abstractions
- Create tooling that enhances research developer productivity, including experiment management systems and CI/testing infrastructure
- Influence the long-term roadmap for research computation and model deployment
- Serve as a technical mentor for other engineers working on compute, infrastructure, and AI systems
