The Backend Software Engineer will join Apple's Camera & Photos Tools & AI team, focusing on building and maintaining backend infrastructure for imaging engineering and quality workflows. This role involves designing and operating Python REST API services and managing large volumes of image and metadata records. The engineer will also work on AI/ML model serving infrastructure and ensure high standards for AI-powered features. Collaboration across various engineering and science teams is essential to understand and meet their needs.

• BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience shipping production backend systems.
• Strong proficiency in Python, with a track record of owning production backend services end to end.
• Strong understanding of REST API design and experience building and operating production REST services at scale.
• Demonstrated experience hosting and serving AI/ML models in production, including infrastructure for inference, scaling, and monitoring.
• Working knowledge of asynchronous job execution patterns for long-running computations.
• Solid understanding of distributed-systems fundamentals.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Hands-on experience with specific self-hosted GPU inference frameworks at production scale.
• Experience building production features with LLM APIs.
• Familiarity with multimodal or computer vision models applied to image analysis.
• Experience with vector databases or semantic search for unstructured data retrieval pipelines.
• Understanding of MLOps principles.
• Awareness of bias and fairness considerations in AI systems.
• Hands-on operational experience with container orchestration and infrastructure-as-code.
• Familiarity with search platforms for indexing and querying large datasets.
• Familiarity with Redis as a cache, message broker, or coordination primitive.
• Comfort working with image data and scientific workflows.
