Job description

As a Staff Software Engineer at Pinterest, you will define and drive the technical direction for the web development layer that product engineers utilize. The role emphasizes web architecture, developer experience, and building scalable foundations for product development, particularly focusing on data fetching. You will collaborate with various teams to align on technical patterns and contribute to the evolution of data fetching in a hybrid GraphQL/REST environment. This position requires strong technical leadership and mentorship skills to influence the engineering direction across the organization.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of web software engineering experience building, designing and evolving client-side data architecture in large-scale web applications.
  • Deep understanding of tradeoffs in caching, consistency, latency, reliability, and developer ergonomics in modern web clients.
  • Expert-level coding skills in languages like JavaScript or TypeScript, with the ability to write production-quality code.
  • Knowledge of Node.js, server-side rendering techniques, and GraphQL frameworks like Relay.
  • Strong experience working across both GraphQL and REST, with the technical judgment to define clear patterns for usage.
  • Proven ability to evaluate complex systems and lead cross-team execution on foundational platform investments.
  • Experience establishing reusable patterns, technical standards, and documentation that improve consistency and maintainability.
  • Strong technical leadership and mentorship skills, with a track record of raising the engineering bar.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to align stakeholders and influence technical direction.
  • Passion for web architecture and interest in staying current with evolving patterns and best practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive technical direction for foundational web capabilities that product engineers use directly.
  • Assess the current ecosystem of frameworks, tooling, and patterns on the web client to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Lead platform investments that simplify development and improve consistency across the product engineering experience.
  • Partner with product, platform, design, and infrastructure teams to align on scalable technical patterns.
  • Shape the evolution of data fetching in a hybrid GraphQL/REST environment.
  • Establish best practices, reusable abstractions, and technical guidance to improve maintainability across the web organization.
  • Mentor engineers and influence technical direction through architecture reviews and design discussions.
  • Contribute to a high-scale web platform serving millions of users and enabling effective product experiences.
