Job description

The Cloud Hardware Development Engineer Intern role at Amazon involves working on custom silicon design and development, including server processors and machine learning accelerators. Interns will engage in hands-on hardware development, collaborating with various teams to bring hardware from design to deployment. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to real projects that impact millions of customers globally. Interns will receive mentorship and support to ensure meaningful contributions during their internship.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with a final graduation date of December 2027 or later.
  • Coursework or project experience in digital logic design and computer architecture.
  • Familiarity with a hardware description language such as Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL.
  • Understanding of fundamental digital design concepts including combinational and sequential logic, finite state machines, timing, and clocking.
  • Experience in hardware design and validation of components, subsystems, and systems.
  • Hands-on experience with firmware development or bare-metal programming.
  • Experience debugging hardware in a lab environment using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as PCIe, I2C, SPI, UART, and Ethernet.
  • Scripting experience in Python, Perl, or shell for test automation.
  • Prior internship, research, or lab experience in hardware development, embedded systems, or firmware.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, bring-up, and validation of hardware systems and subsystems.
  • Develop firmware or low-level software that interfaces directly with hardware.
  • Debug hardware-software integration issues in the lab using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other bench equipment.
  • Write and run tests to validate hardware functionality, performance, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with ASIC, systems, and software teams to take hardware from design through deployment.
  • Document work and present findings to the team.
