The Staff Software Engineer role on the Google Cloud Compute Performance team focuses on providing technical leadership and driving the architectural direction for Google Cloud's Virtual Machine offerings. This position requires deep expertise in large-scale infrastructure and distributed systems, as well as the ability to influence stakeholders and solve complex problems. The team is dedicated to optimizing VM performance and enhancing infrastructure utilization to meet the needs of Google Cloud customers. Engineers in this role will work on critical projects that push the boundaries of hardware efficiency and performance.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience programming in C++.
• 5 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks.
• Experience with CPU/memory architectures and modern server hardware performance characteristics.
• Experience as an architect or technical lead for multi-year infrastructure initiatives.

• Partner with Product Management and cross-functional engineering teams to define the roadmap for GCE’s next-generation VM offerings.
• Design, architect, and develop scalable technical solutions that optimize VM performance.
• Lead complex, multi-functional initiatives across hardware, kernel, virtualization, and product teams.
• Act as a trusted technical advisor to GCE’s most critical customers.
• Mentor junior and senior engineers and establish engineering best practices for performance analysis.
