iCloud Foundation is seeking an experienced software engineer to develop the platform layer for Apple's cloud services. This senior role involves working with a small team to address complex technical challenges that impact multiple engineering teams. The focus is on API and library design, as well as distributed systems, ensuring that other teams can build effectively on the infrastructure provided. Candidates should be prepared to manage both technical and organizational complexities while driving projects from conception to production.
Requirements
- 7+ years of industry experience designing, implementing, and operating highly scalable distributed systems.
- Deep working experience with programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, or Go.
- Expertise in programming in concurrent and multi-threaded environments.
- Experience building platform software that other engineering teams depend on, including API design, versioning, and migration.
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering-related field or equivalent related experience.
- Strong background in functional programming with Scala, OCaml, or a typed functional style in any language.
- Strong background in event streaming, e.g., Kafka.
- Experience with KV data stores, e.g., Cassandra, FoundationDB, or DynamoDB.
- Experience using AWS, GCP, and cloud-native technologies (Containers, Kubernetes, gRPC).
- Experience building documentation, samples, and self-service onboarding that make a platform easy to adopt.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement the platform layer for Apple's cloud services.
- Collaborate with engineering leaders to define project outcomes and constraints.
- Manage technical and organizational complexity throughout project development.
- Drive projects from simple ideas to production-ready solutions.
- Create APIs and libraries that other engineering teams will utilize.
- Build documentation and onboarding materials to facilitate platform adoption.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
