The Paint Process Engineer at Rivian is responsible for enhancing paint shop performance through process optimization and defect reduction. This role involves collaborating with various teams to ensure high-quality paint application while adhering to safety and quality standards. Located in Normal, IL, the engineer will report to the Manager of Process Engineering within the Paint Department. The position requires a strong focus on continuous improvement and effective communication with shop-floor technicians and maintenance teams.

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering
• 3+ years of engineering experience directly supporting a manufacturing paint shop
• Deep understanding of fluid and sealer applications and paint defect identification
• Proficiency in Lean Manufacturing, 5S methodologies, and Kaizen facilitation
• Strong background in structured problem solving and Statistical Process Control

• Analyze and optimize manual deck operations across the paint shop to eliminate technique variations and reduce bottlenecks.
• Monitor the quality output of automated sealer cells and troubleshoot equipment issues.
• Perform root cause analysis on paint and sealer defects to implement permanent corrective actions.
• Evaluate, source, and integrate improved tooling and equipment to enhance finish quality.
• Develop, maintain, and audit Standard Operating Procedures and conduct Layered Process Audits.
• Drive rigorous 5S practices to eliminate contamination and optimize material flow.
• Partner with Environmental Health and Safety to mitigate exposure hazards and ergonomic risks.
• Lead cross-functional Kaizen events and execute cost-reduction projects specific to the paint shop.
