The Staff Software Engineer role at Rivian focuses on building and evolving the agent platform for AI-driven software development within the Autonomy team. This position involves working with a diverse team to enhance the engineering data platform that supports complex workflows and machine learning pipelines. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and performance of the platform while driving improvements through systematic evaluation and experimentation. As an early team member, the engineer will help shape the technical direction and operational model of the team.

• 6+ years of software engineering experience or equivalent demonstrated experience and impact.
• Substantial backend or distributed-systems work across cloud infrastructure, service design, storage, queuing, or secure execution.
• Hands-on experience building and operating LLM applications or agent systems beyond prototypes.
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience with at least one additional relevant language such as Go, Rust, C++, or TypeScript.
• Strong communication skills and developer empathy.

• Architect and build the core runtime for autonomous agents operating on Rivian systems.
• Establish an execution and permission model with isolated workspaces and audit trails.
• Deliver capabilities across the engineering lifecycle, including code generation and review.
• Instrument agent workflows to capture traces and evaluate model performance.
• Define the technical strategy and roadmap for AI developer productivity across Autonomy.
