Job description
The Staff Structural Simulation Engineer at Rivian will lead structural and thermo-mechanical risk management for advanced vehicle electronics through high-fidelity numerical simulations. This role involves defining critical design requirements for integrated PCB layouts and ensuring hardware reliability targets are met. The engineer will serve as a technical authority, guiding multidisciplinary teams toward engineering excellence. A strong focus will be placed on establishing material characterization protocols and maintaining world-class simulation fidelity.
Requirements
- Master's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent; Ph.D. preferred.
- 3-5 years of relevant industry experience with a Ph.D. or 5-7 years with a Master's degree in Structural Mechanics for electronics assemblies.
- Solid understanding of theoretical and experimental structural mechanics, including Non-Linear analysis and Coupled Thermal-Structural analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in IC package design and common Chip-Package Interaction failure modes.
- Strong foundation in FEA solvers such as Ansys and Abaqus, with the ability to troubleshoot analysis convergence issues.
Responsibilities
- Spearhead structural and thermo-mechanical design risk management for low-voltage electronics assemblies.
- Execute multi-scale numerical simulations for electronics assemblies to meet performance and reliability targets.
- Conduct structural stiffness assessments and simulations for haptic switches and touch surfaces.
- Perform non-linear structural evaluations under human comfort loading and aggressive abuse scenarios.
- Direct multi-physics simulations for critical low-voltage electronic modules and sensing hardware.
- Define structural risk margins and optimize component layout on printed circuit boards.
- Deliver comprehensive design guidance, including setting enclosure stiffness requirements and optimizing cooling architecture.
- Establish material characterization protocols and manage the centralized simulation material database.
- Direct and validate structural benchmarking activities and sophisticated model correlation.
- Provide simulation expertise and support to reliability engineering teams for root-cause analysis.
Benefits
- Employees at Rivian are often offered comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with company match, ESPP and potential RSU grants, performance bonuses, and generous time off including paid parental and sick leave. Perks can include 24/7 mental-health coaching and therapy, Hinge Health for Anthem enrollees, tuition assistance and professional development, plus on-site food and a wide range of employee discounts on items like computers, mobile phones, home loans, and pet care.
